Most of the websites you are visiting today secured with HTTPS. If you're not yet, you should make sure you do that because security is essential to ensure your customer's personal information is secure. That is why it is vital to secure your server with HTTPS.

What is an SSL certificate?

SSL is the abbreviation of Secure Sockets Layer, a global standard security technology that helps encrypt communication between a web browser and web server. This technology is used by millions of website's online to decrease the risk of sensitive information being stolen or leaked by hackers. In short, SSL allows for private conversation just between two parties.

This secure connection will be automatically displayed on the user browser, which could identify a padlock next to URL and the "https" prefix instead of "http". To get the element, you need to install SSL on a web server, and there are two functions:

  • authenticate the identity of the website, which guarantee your visitors that they are not visiting the bogus website.

  • Also, it encrypts the data that's transfers

Who needs an SSL certificate?

A website that belongs to any individual, organisation, or business using their website requires receiving, processing, collecting, storing, or displaying sensitive information. Such information could be logins password, financial information (credit cards or bank accounts), personal information (name, address, email, phone, social security number, date of birth).

Are all SSL certificate the same?

The short answer to this is NO. There are several types of SSL.

  • Basic SSL: this package is a domain validation that provides quick and easy automated assurance to protect your site, and it intends to cover a single domain. A computerised warranty means that your certificate will issue in minutes after the verification.

  • Wildcard SSL: is about organisation validation that protects multiple subdomains with one solution. No need for a separate certificate for each subdomain. This type of certificate is for all of them.

  • EV SSL: extended validation provides the highest level of assurance. This type of certificate automatically displays your verified organisational information within the certificate details.
